Resource Claiming with Niko:In this video I demonstrate a resource claiming exercise with Niko, a young Malinois here for issues regarding impulse control and reactivity toward other dogs/animals. Resource claiming exercises such as this are a cornerstone of our training program when dealing with impulse control, reactivity or aggression issues as they have a dramatic impact on behavior and relationship. By setting up food claiming exercises such as this we are accomplishing several goals, we’re adding meaning to our “no” marker, our spatial pressure, and our ecollar correction, we are directly addressing arousal and impulse control through a clear conversation, and we are establishing a hierarchy around resources, all very important based to cover when modifying reactive/aggressive behavior. Once this exercise has been generalized to several resources, people and environments, the same concepts and techniques can be used to control our dogs arousal levels in nearly any situation effectively eliminating reactive responses and instead teaching the dog to defer to us in situations of excitement or arousal instead of acting impulsively.Link to full video here: https://youtu.be/FyXWO_PPZpgIf you’re dealing with reactivity, aggression or any other problem behaviour with your dog, or just looking to fine tune your training and relationship, we are here to help!
